How to Smoke Whisky at Home: The Complete Guide

Smoke slowly escaping from a wooden dome, a scent of oak or applewood, then the first sip — transformed. Smoking whisky at home has become the signature move of enthusiasts who love to host. Good news: it's simple, quick and spectacular. Here's everything you need to know.

Smoked whisky vs peated whisky: don't confuse them

A connoisseur's distinction: a peated whisky (Islay, Laphroaig, Ardbeg…) gets its smoke from drying the malt over peat, during production. Whisky smoked with a smoker receives its aromas at serving time: wood smoke that settles on the surface and perfumes the first sips. The advantage? It works with any whisky — and well beyond (more on that below).

The equipment you need

A complete smoker kit has it all: the wooden dome that sits on the glass, a stainless sieve for the chips, a refillable torch, a cleaning brush and an assortment of aromatic wood chips. Setup takes one minute, literally.

Smoking your whisky in 5 steps

  1. Pour 2–4 cl of whisky into a tumbler (wide-bottomed glass).
  2. Place a pinch of wood chips in the dome's sieve — a teaspoon is enough.
  3. Set the dome on the glass and light the chips with the torch for 3–5 seconds, until they smoulder.
  4. Let it infuse: 30 seconds for a subtle note, 60–90 seconds for a deep smokiness.
  5. Lift the dome in front of your guests — that's the moment they'll remember — and enjoy right away.

Which wood for which whisky?

The golden rule: start short (30 seconds) and taste. You can always smoke again — you can never un-smoke.

The 5 beginner mistakes

  1. Burning the chips with a continuous flame: smouldering embers give soft smoke; a flame gives harshness.
  2. Too many chips: the smoke turns acrid and bitter. A pinch is enough.
  3. Smoking too long: beyond 2 minutes, smoke dominates everything.
  4. Using a narrow glass: the dome needs a wide-mouthed glass to sit properly.
  5. Skipping maintenance: a quick brush after each use, and never immerse the wood in water.

Beyond whisky: cocktails, gin and even food

The smoker doesn't stop at whisky: a pecan-smoked Old Fashioned (smoke the empty glass before building the drink), a pear-smoked gin & tonic that surprises every guest, an amber rum over oak… some even use it on hot chocolate or cheese. One accessory, dozens of experiences.

Frequently asked questions

Does smoking whisky really change the taste?

Yes — especially on the first sips: the smoke settles on the surface and on the nose. The effect is distinct without denaturing the whisky, and its intensity is dosed by infusion time.

Which whisky should I start with?

A soft, affordable whisky (blend or bourbon): the smoke adds a whole dimension. No need to smoke a great peated malt — it already is.

Does the smoker work with any glass?

With most glasses and decanters up to about 10 cm across — tumblers, cocktail glasses, and even directly on a decanter like our globe decanter.
